Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG), together with Irish Rail – Iarnrod Eireann, won this year’s Geoscience Ireland Award. The Award recognises exceptional achievement in the design and delivery of projects requiring significant geo-scientific expertise in the development of natural resources, infrastructure and natural resources.
The Award was for the development of a ranking and assessment method for embankments and cuttings across the earthworks assets of Irish Rail . The assessment provides a scientific means to supporting decisions on slopes maintenance and remediation strategies. The two-year project involved updating the nationwide asset database nad devising specific hazard and vulnerability assessment procedures leading to the provision of customised software.
Geoscience Ireland companies accounted for four of the five projects shortlisted i.e. GDGEO (2 projects), TOBIN, Lisheen Mining & Technical Services. The fifth project was by a consortium of EPA, Teagasc, Cranfield and UCD.
The Engineering Project of the Year was awarded to The Corrib Project – Onshore Gas Pipeline by Shell E&P (Ireland) Ltd/ RPS Group Ltd/ Roadbridge Ltd/ BAM / W&F JV. Many GI companies are pleased to have worked on various aspects of the Corrib Project, including Irish Drilling, TOBIN, IGSL, Murphy Surveys and PMS.
