Project Objectives/Outcomes
The new extension of the Aikengall “Phase II” wind farm, south of Dunbar in east Scotland consisted of 19 Siemens Direct Drive wind turbine machines with an installed capacity of 60.8 MW. Many of these turbines were situated on high ridges in difficult and remote terrain.
Our Role
ByrneLooby, acting as civil and geotechnical consultants on the project, was appointed to design and supervise the ground investigation works; produce the civils package for access tracks, culverts and river crossings, and design crane hardstand areas to facilitate erection of wind turbine towers. ByrneLooby determined the suitability and classification of site-won material to maximise the volume of site material for reuse as road stone and to limit export of excavation arisings off site.
ByrneLooby also value engineered the number and length of access roads required by initial planning proposal by rationalising accesses and reducing the total required length of road required at construction stage by approximately 15%, which provided significant savings to the contractor and developer.
