Project Objectives/ Outcomes
NEOM is the planned independent economic zone in the Northwest of Saudi Arabia. It is born out of the ambition of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to see the country develop into a pioneering and thriving model of excellence in various and important areas of life. The NEOM Reservoirs – NEOM Circular City Water Storage Reservoirs Project involved the development of the Concept Design & Employer’s Requirements for the 2 No. reservoirs and associated infrastructure, namely: • NEOM Circular City North East Reservoir (NCC NER) • NEOM Circular City Water Innovation Centre Reservoir (NCC WICR) The Employer’s Requirements were prepared based on the FIDIC Yellow Book Conditions of Contract (First Edition, 1999) with Employer modifications. The scope of works associated with the NCC NER involves construction of a twin celled 170,000m3 treated water storage reservoir, circa 2.5km of new access road linking the proposed site & highway 5, a reinforced utility culvert to be constructed adjacent to the proposed access road required to accommodate the 1200mm DIA inlet & outlet pipework, site buildings, chlorination & Photovoltaic (PV) installations and a tanker filling station. As part of the Design for the proposed reservoir and WDC, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) assessment was carried out to ensure the Design provided the optimum solution with respect to flow patterns through the reservoir. The Design & Employer’s Requirements were completed for the NCC NER to include provisions such that 2 No. further 170,000m3 could to be constructed at the site in future bringing the total volume of storage on site to 510,000m3 and also facilitate the modular expansion of the chlorination & PV installations. Initially the NCC NER will supply water for construction activities in the Neom Innovation Centre area. To facilitate this the outlet main from the reservoir will be terminated at a connection chamber near to the existing Highway 5 and capped. In the longer term the NCC NER will provide water for industrial and domestic water supply purposes and act as a strategic storage reservoir. The scope of works associated with the NCC WICR involves construction of a twin celled 30,000m3 treated water storage reservoir, site buildings and chlorination & PV installations. As part of the Design for the proposed reservoir and WDC, a CFD assessment was also carried out to ensure the Design of the NCC WICR provided the optimum solution with respect to flow patterns through the reservoir. The NCC WICR will supply the irrigation requirements for the food innovation area within the greenhouses and fields around the innovation Centre. Until such time as those areas are constructed and become operational the inlet and outlet mains to the NCC WICR will be terminated at a valve chamber immediately outside the site boundary and capped.
