TerraConsult, a wholly-owned ByrneLooby company, was the lead landfill design engineer on one of the world’s largest hazardous waste management facilities, the Sohar Industrial Waste Treatment Facility.

Project Objective

The project’s scope of work involves the construction of waste management and treatment plant with a capacity of 135000 tonnes per year located at Sohar, Al Batinah, Oman. The facility will include 3,000,000 cubic meters of the industrial waste landfill, a 28,000,000 cubic meters of slag landfill, a 100,000 tonnes per year stabilisation plant, a 1,000 tonnes per year physical-chemical treatment plant, a 50,000 tonnes per year incineration plant and dedicated systems for recycling special waste streams such as lead-acid batteries. It will also include a dedicated tanker vessel that will service visiting ships so they can discharge their waste in line with guidelines prescribed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Our Role

The TerraConsult brief on this Design & Build contract included tender support, site investigations, environmental monitoring, hydrogeological studies, facility master planning, earthworks design, landfill design, geosynthetics design, surface water management design, site-based construction support (including CQA) and preparation of the operations, environmental monitoring and closure plans.
