Project Objectives

Umm Qasr port is Iraq’s second largest which handles most of the country’s freight and international aid traffic. The Ministry of Transport planned to upgrade the port as well as modernise the control systems.

Our Role

BLP carried out detailed design of staged filling behind a new Sheet Piled Wall for the new Pier and Sea Walls at the new Naval Port of Umm Qasr. Our design was undertaken on behalf of PND Engineers Inc and reviewed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Works entailed the placement of up to 14m of fill material to form the new port facility behind the sea walls.  The scope of works incorporated the design and specification of additional ground investigations and the interpretation of the soft ground engineering characteristics in relation to bearing capacity and settlement behavior.  During construction BLP undertook reviews of the construction instrumentation and monitoring results to validate field settlement behavior against predicted design assessments.
