Geoscience Ireland (GI) Director Sean Finlay elected President of the Irish Academy of Engineering
At it s AGM in Dublin on May 1st, the Irish Academy of Engineering elected Sean Finlay as its President for 2025-2027.
Sean is a graduate in Geology from UCD and holds a Diploma in Project Management for Engineers from TCD. His early career was with Tara Mines Ltd during the discovery and development of a world class zinc and lead mine in Ireland. He went on to found and lead mineral exploration and development companies Celtic Gold plc and Celtic Resources Holding plc with operations in Ireland, Canada and the FSU. He was Non Executive Chairman of Glencar Mining which developed gold mines in Ghana and Mali.
He later served as a director of TOBIN Consulting Engineers leading its growth in environmental, geotechnical and planning services for major infrastructure projects. Since 2012, He has been a director of Geoscience Ireland a network of companies and research organisations, focussed on winning international business for its members.
Throughout his career, Sean has been involved with professional and vocational organisations, including the Irish Mining & Quarrying Society and was awarded the President’s Prize of Engineers Ireland for his work on the Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics. He has been a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineers since 2012.
The Irish Academy of Engineering (IAE) is an all-island think tank founded in 1997. https://iae.ie/ The aim of the Academy is to advance the well-being of the country by marshaling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent, evidence-based advice to policy-makers on matters involving engineering and technology. Its members are Irish engineers of distinction, drawn from a wide range of disciplines, and membership currently stands at 184. IAE i s a member of the European association of engineering academies Euro-Case and of its equivalent world body CAETS.
